The Potty Training Wisdom No One Told Me

The One Thing No One Tells You About Potty Training Your Toddler

There’s one thing that absolutely no one told me about potty training: it might go really well and be very easy for your toddler!

I was fully prepared for a battle with my almost 3 year old. I expected there to be pee and tears all over our house. We laid down waterproof picnic blankets and towels everywhere and the first few days were definitely a training process – but he never had a full accident! WHAT? No one told me this was possible! There are two trains of thought 1.) The child will “potty train themselves” (no way that’s true) OR 2.) It’s a total nightmare.

To rewind for a moment, we used the Oh Crap! Potty Training book as our guide. I read 3 different books and this was the one that made the most sense for us. In a nutshell, your child goes bottomless for a few days and then commando and then add in underwear about a month afterwards.

I should also tell you, my child is a perfectionist. Big time! I have NO idea where he got that from (just kidding. I have an idea). But the idea of him having to make mistakes over and over to learn was going to be hard for him. He took it well and learned very quickly as a result. He learned how to control his body and he was proud of that control!

We used a small potty that was accessible to him and then quickly found a step stool and potty seat that worked on the big toilet.

Now, it has been almost been 3 months since we daytime trained (not night or nap time) and we haven’t had an accident since the first month.

So take heart, set your expectations low and just remember it could all go really well!
